History

RAT FM was launched in 2026, born out of a clear need to reconnect community broadcasting with the people it is meant to serve. In the wake of a previously established community radio station that had become disconnected from its audience and struggled with internal challenges, a gap emerged—one that called for fresh energy, transparency, and a renewed commitment to community values.

Recognising this opportunity, RAT FM was created as a new kind of community broadcaster: one that puts people first, values local voices, and actively engages with the community it represents. From the outset, RAT FM has focused on rebuilding trust in community radio by being inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs and interests of its listeners.

While RAT FM itself is a new station, it is backed by years of experience and a strong foundation in independent broadcasting. Our sister stations over at PHAZE Radio Network (phazern.org.au) have been operating since 2012, providing digital broadcasting and community-driven content across a wide range of platforms. This connection brings valuable knowledge, technical expertise, and a proven commitment to innovative and community-focused media.

By combining fresh vision with established experience, RAT FM represents the next evolution of community broadcasting—one that embraces diversity, supports local talent, and ensures that the community always has a voice.

As we continue to grow, RAT FM remains committed to building a station that truly belongs to its listeners—shaped by the community, for the community.
