RAT FM Broadcasts Live from Ballarat Fire Station During Heritage Weekend
May 26th 2026
RAT FM was proud to be part of this year’s Ballarat Heritage Weekend, broadcasting live from the historic Ballarat Fire Station and bringing listeners closer to one of the city’s most important pieces of history.
Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed a fantastic community atmosphere, with a popular sausage sizzle helping to raise funds while providing a great opportunity for locals and visitors to gather, share stories, and learn more about Ballarat’s firefighting heritage.
The Ballarat Fire Station itself has a fascinating history. The original station was destroyed by fire many years ago, resulting in the construction of the current facility that continues to serve the community today. The site stands as a reminder of both the challenges faced by emergency services and the resilience of the Ballarat community.
One of the highlights of the event was the display of a beautifully preserved vintage Dodge fire truck. The historic vehicle attracted considerable attention from visitors, offering a glimpse into how firefighters once responded to emergencies. Compared to the modern appliances currently operated by Country Fire Authority (CFA), the Dodge represents a remarkable contrast in firefighting technology and capability. While today’s vehicles feature advanced pumping systems, communications equipment, and modern safety features, the vintage Dodge serves as an important reminder of the evolution of emergency services over the decades.
AT FM’s outside broadcast provided listeners with interviews, event updates, and coverage throughout the day, helping to showcase the important role that the Ballarat Fire Station has played in protecting the community for generations.
We would like to thank the volunteers, firefighters, event organisers, and everyone who stopped by to say hello during the broadcast. Events such as Ballarat Heritage Weekend help preserve and celebrate the stories that have shaped our city, and RAT FM is proud to support and promote these important community initiatives.
